Small businesses are ill-equipped to deal with year 2000
computer problems, because many small business owners mistakenly believe it is a problem
that does not affect them, according to a survey by the National Association of Security
Dealers.
While government and large corporations are being alerted,
small business establishments must prepare for the millenium on their own. The NASD
surveyed 5,600 members recently and found 61 percent of the small companies responding do
not have a Y2K plan yet.
The year 2000 problem, which will cause computer systems to
read 2000 as 1900 unless they are fixed, is expected to have a major impact on small
businesses, including shutting down computer systems, contaminating databases, and causing
security systems to fail.
