Synopsis:
Patrick Lanigan had a bright future as a young partner in a prominent Southern law firm. Then one cold winter night, he was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death; the casket they buried held nothing but his ashes. A short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial, then fled. A fortune was stolen from his ex-firm's offshore account. Patrick ran, covering his tracks the whole way--but not far enough or fast enough. It began when he disappeared. But it really didn't start until they found him. LG main selection.

Great writing style, but I didn't like any of the characters
This was my first reading of a John Grisham novel. I like his writing style ad pacing, but this story just wasn't for me. I didn't like Patrick, I thought he was little more than a common thief. Never mind his motivations. And there's a little twist at the end that just didn't work for me. I seem to be in the great minority, but this book just didn't do a thing for me other than make me say "I might read another of his books."

Great story of what everyone would like to do at some point!
I liked it for the most part. The way Patrick got out of every jam kind of made me say "You've got to be kidding" It was the perfect crime if you accept a lot of the coincidences, which I did. Torn by the suprise ending though.

At last, something without a huge STATEMENT
i've been disappointed with grisham's work for the past couple of years. his stories were turning into excuses for expressing his strong views on everything in our society. in the partner, his statements are more subtle, and don't over take the book. its an interesting novel, and a departure from his usual style. the ending was a bit abrupt, and very unexpected, there was something fun to it, but a part of me was also tuned off by its finale.

Attention grabbing & suspensful
I have to read a book that grabs my attention right away and holds on to it for the entire book, this one did that for sure. It was not what I had expected at all and the ending WOW!! I would have changed the ending but it sure made you think about the results of wrongdoing. I could not put the book down, I read it every second I got. I read the book in 3 days, a record for me. It is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I like legal stories and medical dramas so I will definetly be reading more of John Grisham's books.

Good book, terrible, terrible ending.
I would have given this book an 8 or 9 had it not been for the ending. Patrick didn't care for his partners, his wife or his life, so it was understandable why he did what he did. What wasn't understandable however was what happened at the end since the relationship between Patrick and Eva was so special and close. Disappointing and depressing.
